Why Install a Home EV Charger?

Relying on public charge points is expensive, unreliable and inconvenient. Plugging in at home overnight — like you do with your phone — is how the vast majority of EV drivers do most of their charging.

A standard domestic 3-pin socket can charge at around 2.3kW — adding only 8 miles of range per hour, and potentially risking damage to the socket if used regularly for extended periods. A dedicated 7kW home charge point is safer, faster and smarter.

3× faster charging — a 7kW charger adds around 30 miles of range per hour vs 8 miles from a 3-pin socket.

Dramatically cheaper than public charging — home charging on a standard tariff costs around 24p/kWh vs 60–80p/kWh at a rapid public charger.

Smart features — app control, scheduled off-peak charging, energy monitoring and solar integration all reduce costs further.

Adds value to your home — a dedicated charge point is increasingly a buyer expectation, not a luxury.

Leading EV Charger Brands

We are brand-agnostic and install whichever charger best suits your needs and budget. These are some of the most popular models we supply and fit:

Zappi by myenergi

The market leader for solar-integrated home charging. The Zappi automatically diverts surplus solar generation to your car, maximising self-consumption and reducing your electricity bill. Three charging modes: Fast, Eco and Eco+. Ideal if you have or are planning solar panels.

Easee One

A sleek, compact 7.4kW charger that has become one of Europe's best-selling home charge points. The Easee One features app control, load balancing (important for homes with multiple EVs), and a discreet design that looks equally at home on a garage wall or the side of a house.

Pod Point Solo 3

A reliable, feature-rich 7.2kW charger with a strong app, scheduled charging and Octopus Energy Intelligent Octopus integration for fully automatic off-peak charging. A great all-round choice for drivers who want simplicity and reliability without the premium price tag.

Andersen A2

For drivers who want premium aesthetics alongside premium features. The Andersen A2 is available in a range of finishes and materials (including wood veneers and metal), making it a design statement as much as a charge point. Available as tethered or socketed, up to 7.4kW.

Not Sure?

If you are not sure which charger to choose, that is exactly what our free survey is for. We will ask about your vehicle, your tariff, whether you have solar, and how you typically charge — then recommend the best option for your situation. No pressure, no upselling.

The Installation Process

From first contact to charging your car, here is what to expect:

1

Free site survey

We visit your property, assess your consumer unit, measure the cable run, discuss charger options, confirm your OZEV grant eligibility and provide a written fixed-price quote. No charge, no obligation.

2

Installation day (2–4 hours)

Our electrician runs a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit to the charge point location, mounts the unit, connects cabling, and commissions the charger including smart features and app pairing.

3

Testing & handover

We test the full installation, demonstrate the charger and app to you, and issue a Part P Building Regulations certificate and NICEIC completion certificate. All documentation issued the same day.

4

Charge your car

You are ready to charge. Most customers set up a schedule via the app to charge overnight on their cheapest tariff rate. If you have solar, you configure the Eco mode to prioritise solar surplus.

Smart Charging Features

Modern home charge points are far more sophisticated than a simple on/off switch. Here is what smart charging can do for you:

App & remote control

Start, stop and monitor charging sessions from your phone. Check energy used per session, set charging limits and get notifications when your car is fully charged.

Off-peak scheduled charging

Set the charger to only draw power during your cheapest tariff window — typically overnight between 11pm and 6am. On Octopus Energy Intelligent Octopus, this can be done fully automatically.

Solar PV integration

Chargers like the Zappi monitor your solar generation and divert surplus power to your car in real time. Charge your EV entirely from sunshine when conditions allow.

Load balancing

For households with multiple EVs or high-demand appliances, load balancing ensures the charger automatically reduces its output to prevent tripping the mains supply.

Workplace Charging

Providing EV charging at your workplace is increasingly a staff expectation — and for many businesses, it is a straightforward way to reduce fleet running costs and demonstrate environmental commitment.

We design and install workplace charging solutions from a single bay to full car-park installations, with load management to ensure the site supply is never overloaded.

OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS): Eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations can claim a voucher worth up to £350 per socket, for up to 40 sockets. We are an OZEV authorised installer, which is required to apply for the grant. We handle the application process on your behalf.

EV Charger FAQs

How much does an EV charger installation cost?

A standard home EV charger installation starts from £950+VAT, which includes the charger unit, cabling, dedicated circuit and NICEIC certification. The final cost depends on the charger chosen, cable run distance, and whether any additional electrical work is required. If you are eligible for the OZEV grant (worth up to £350), this is deducted from your invoice. We provide fixed-price quotes after a free site survey.

How long does an EV charger take to install?

Most home installations are completed in 2 to 4 hours. This covers running the cable, mounting the unit, connecting it to the consumer unit, commissioning the smart features and pairing the app. You will be able to charge your vehicle the same day.

Do I need a new consumer unit to get an EV charger?

In most cases, no. We add a dedicated circuit to your existing consumer unit. If your board is old, full, or lacks RCD protection, we may recommend upgrading it at the same time — but this is assessed at the free site survey and you will know before any work starts. We never recommend unnecessary work.

Can I charge my EV from my solar panels?

Yes — smart chargers like the Zappi by myenergi are specifically designed to integrate with solar panels. The charger monitors your generation in real time and diverts any surplus solar power to your car before it is exported to the grid. This can significantly reduce the cost of charging. We install both solar PV systems and EV chargers, so we can design the perfect integrated setup for you.

Am I eligible for the OZEV EV charger grant?

The OZEV Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant gives eligible applicants £350 off the cost of a home charge point. To qualify, you need to own or lease an eligible EV or PHEV, have dedicated off-street parking, and use an OZEV-authorised installer. JT Electrical is OZEV authorised. For businesses, the Workplace Charging Scheme offers up to £350 per socket on up to 40 sockets. We will confirm your eligibility during the free survey and handle the application paperwork.
